Hello everyone! I wanted to let you all know that this year's Metro Detroit Great American Meatout will be held at Ferndale High School (881 Pinecrest in Ferndale) -- on Sunday, April 13 from noon - 5 pm. Admission is $10 adults, $5 students, children under 6 and VegMichigan members free. For discounted admission and schedule details, visit www.vegmichigan.org/ meatout I will have a table set up there and I will be performing a food demo/talk. Heading the speaker lineup are Colleen Patrick-Goudreau, celebrated author of The Joy of Vegan Baking, who is also a columnist at VegNews magazine, podcast host and founder of Compassionate Cooks, on debunking the myths of a plant-based diet and being vegan in a non-vegan world; and Milton Mills, MD, associate director of preventive medicine for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) in Washington, D.C. who lectures on the impact of meat and dairy consumption on human health and also specializes in race and diet. There will be eight other speakers, plenty of delicious food, cooking demos, exhibitors, fun people, and information.
Please think about bringing a family member or friend who would be interested in learning more about the health, environmental, and ethical reasons to become vegetarian or at least to cut back on meat. Everyone probably knows people who have expressed either an interest in becoming vegetarian, cutting back on meat consumption, or the need to overcome health concerns which a vegan diet would address. The Meatout is a perfect low-pressure opportunity to expose them to the benefits of a plant-based, cruelty-free diet. Hope to see you there!

This month's guest speaker is Representative Andy Meisner from the Michigan State Legislature. We will be having a "town hall meeting." He is interested in getting feedback for constituents and other Michiganders about topics that are on their mind. He will also be sharing with us his ideas for stopping the fall in property values. While a bit out of the norm, this is an opportunity to meet with someone who passes laws and enacts legislation that effects our lives everyday. Come enjoy the great food and participate in the lively discussion. Come to enjoy some tasty raw food dishes. Bring a raw dish to share. First time visitors may pay $10 in lieu of bringing a dish. However, they are encouraged to bring a dish so there is enough food for everyone. Plan to make a meal of it. Please bring your recipe. We will share our raw food dish making adventures and testimonials each month. And just plain have some fun, too! Please RSVP for headcount. DATE: Monday, March 31 TIME: 6:30-8:30PM LOCATION: Colony Park Apartments Clubhouse - NE corner of 12 Mile and Lahser Please email me at rawdwyer@rawdwyer.co m or call me at 734-812-9137 with any questions. In this class we cover techniques for dehydrating a wide variety of foods including tasty crackers, desserts, entrees, fruit dishes, spicy nuts and more. This could be the key for you to eating and enjoying more raw food. If you've thought about buying a dehydrator or even own one that sits unused or simply looking for new ideas, this is the class to motivate you to take the next step in your health. While we will discuss the benefits of dehydrated food over cooked food, what kind of dehydrator to purchase and how to use it, the focus of the class is on food preparation and our favorite part - eating what we have made! So bring a friend and join us as we joyfully make and eat life giving food together. TIME: 7-9 p.m. COST: $45 LOCATION: My house in Canton, MI NOTE: The dishes we will prepare may require some soaking of items which we will cover but not any sprouting. See the "Breads, Crackers, Cookies and Chips" class to learn how to use sprouted grains in recipes both dehydrated and not.
