May Meetup Raw Potluck & Book Discussion

This is a raw potluck, so please bring a raw, vegan dish to share with those in attendance. If it can be organic, even better :-) Recipes can be found here - on our message board. Please contact any one of the organizers if you are unsure of what to bring or what to expect at one of these events.

The book Enzyme Nutrition does not have to be read in order to attend. I will have detailed notes about the book to hand out that evening, so even those who have not read the book will find this of some interest, and will find the discussion easy to follow along with. Those who will have read the book by that point, I would like all comments (good, bad, or otherwise) to be included. I am looking for critique and skepticism as much as I am looking for praise of his work, considering a very large segment of mankind is unaware of his theories.

The book to be discussed will be Dr. Edward Howell's Enzyme Nutrition, considered by myself to be the bible of the raw food movement, from a science/historical approach. Dr. Howell's pioneering research since 1930 has challenged the modern day conception that food enzymes are not useful for the health and wellness of human beings. The evidence presented and interdisciplinary approach Dr. Howell uses (drawing from paleontologists, historians, scientists, anthropologists, and extensive medical research) sets Enzyme Nutrition well apart from other books that detail the raw food movement. This book, moreso than others I have read, will give anyone who's new, or seasoned, as a raw foodist the scientific ammo to combat even the most dubious critic of the raw food path.

An outline for the book discussion can be found Here, on our "files" page

Book info, plus various quotes by Dr. Howell, including many in the book (updated periodically), can be found Here - keep scrolling down this message thread :-)

Some side notes

This will be the Jaxraw Meetup for the Month of May, as The Present Moment is hosting an event on the previous Monday and will not be available for a meetup during this month.

This Book Discussion and Raw Potluck will also be held on the next evening, Sunday for those whose schedules may conflict with certain dates during this Memorial Day weekend. You could attend more than one date if you so desire, but it is not necessary. It will be the same event each day.

My roommates still consist of 1 Ninja and 2 long-hair feline hellions. Not much has changed because of 1 potluck, though she may be slicing up the leftovers with her ninja sword as I am preparing for Day #2. The Ninja actually laid down all the hardwood floors in the place, giving it that nice, pretty glow. Any raw food that is dropped on these floors may garner a worried look from her, but I assure you ... she will do you no harm :-)

The "heads-up" concerning the feline hellions is for people who may have allergies concerning long-haired cats. These three are not raw, but maybe your presence at this meetup will convince them otherwise. One can dream, no?

Of course, if any questions do come about (about the book or otherwise), I am always available through this site. I hope to see some new and returning faces for this particular weekend.
